Travel Currents – October 27, 2026

👋 A Note from Debi

Welcome to this week’s Travel Currents! Whether you’re dreaming about a faraway destination, planning your next cruise, or simply collecting ideas for a future getaway, there is always something new to discover in the world of travel.

This week, we’re looking at an investigation that highlights the importance of booking safely online, destinations worth adding to your inspiration list, an extraordinary world cruise, and an upcoming change to Carnival’s drink and Wi-Fi package pricing.

My goal is to help you stay informed without feeling overwhelmed. A little knowledge before you book can make planning your next escape feel a whole lot easier.

🛡️ Booking.com Investigation Highlights the Need to Watch for Scams

What happened?

On October 21, the European Commission announced an investigation involving Booking.com. The concerns include potentially fraudulent accommodation listings, phishing scams, and whether paid listings are clearly identified as advertising. Booking.com has said it is cooperating with the investigation.

An investigation is not a finding of wrongdoing. However, it is a useful reminder that even when booking through a familiar travel website, it pays to stay alert.

Why it matters

Booking online is convenient, but travelers should be cautious about unexpected messages, suspicious payment requests, and offers that seem too good to be true. Scammers may try to imitate a hotel or booking platform to convince travelers to share personal information or send money.

What you should know

  • Book through a website or platform you trust, and double-check the web address before entering payment details.
  • Be cautious if a property contacts you unexpectedly and asks you to pay again or provide financial information.
  • If you receive a message about a problem with your reservation, contact the booking platform or property using contact information you independently verify.
  • Read recent guest reviews and carefully check the cancellation and payment terms before confirming a stay.

The takeaway: A few extra minutes checking a booking can help protect both your vacation plans and your wallet.

🌎 National Geographic Shares 25 Destinations to Inspire Your 2027 Travels

What happened?

National Geographic released its Best of the World 2027 list on October 20. The collection highlights 25 destinations across six continents, offering ideas for travelers who want to explore somewhere new or experience a familiar place differently.

The list includes destinations such as Norway’s fjord country, Grenada, Halifax in Nova Scotia, Luxor in Egypt, Madison in Wisconsin, and Baltimore in Maryland. Santa Catalina Island in California was also recognized as the readers’ choice.

Why it matters

Travel inspiration does not have to mean booking an expensive international trip. Sometimes a destination closer to home offers just as much opportunity to learn something new, enjoy beautiful scenery, or explore local history and culture.

A list like this can be a starting point for discovering places you might not have considered. It is not a checklist you need to complete, and you certainly do not have to travel to the trendiest destination to have a memorable vacation.

What you should know

As you browse destination ideas, think about what you enjoy most when you travel. Is it history, wildlife, scenic views, local food, or simply having time to slow down?

Then consider practical details such as the best time to visit, how much walking is involved, transportation options, and whether the destination fits your budget and travel style.

The takeaway: Let inspiration lead the way, then choose a destination that works for you.

🚢 MSC Opens Bookings for a 119-Night World Cruise

What happened?

MSC Cruises has opened bookings for its 2029 World Cruise aboard MSC Magnifica. The voyage is planned to span 119 nights and visit 21 countries, with nine overnight port calls along the way.

Travelers can join the cruise from one of four embarkation ports: Civitavecchia, serving Rome; Genoa; Marseille; or Barcelona. The itinerary travels through regions that include South America, the Pacific, Australia, and Asia.

Why it matters

A world cruise offers a very different way to travel. Instead of arranging flights, hotels, and transportation for a series of separate trips, travelers can unpack once and explore multiple regions while keeping the ship as their home base.

Of course, a voyage lasting nearly four months is a major commitment. It takes more than a love of travel to decide whether this style of trip is right for you.

What you should know

Before considering a long cruise, look beyond the advertised itinerary. Review the full route, included services, additional expenses, visa and entry requirements, travel insurance needs, and cancellation terms.

Think about the practical side, too. Would you be comfortable being away from home for nearly four months? What arrangements would you need for medications, ongoing appointments, pets, or responsibilities at home?

For some travelers, a world cruise may be a once-in-a-lifetime dream. For others, a shorter cruise with a few carefully chosen ports may be a better fit. Both can offer wonderful experiences.

The takeaway: Big travel dreams are worth exploring, but the right trip is the one that fits your life as well as your wish list.

💳 Carnival Is Changing Drink and Wi-Fi Package Pricing

What happened?

Carnival Cruise Line is introducing pricing changes for individual beverage packages and Wi-Fi plans beginning December 1, 2026. Under the new approach, prices will vary based on factors such as sailing length, itinerary, and season.

Carnival has also offered FunPacks, which bundle select cruise extras. The initial purchase window for the current offer closes October 30, 2026, for eligible sailings departing October 31, 2026, through December 31, 2027. Eligibility and terms apply.

Why it matters

If you like to plan your cruise expenses before sailing, package pricing is worth paying attention to. With prices varying by sailing, the cost you see for one cruise may not be the same as the cost for another.

That does not automatically mean every package will cost more. It means you should check the price for your specific sailing instead of assuming the package has a standard price.

What you should know

  • Compare package prices for your actual sailing before deciding whether to buy.
  • Consider how you will use the package. A beverage package may not make sense if you rarely order the included drinks, and you may not need a Wi-Fi plan for every person in your cabin.
  • Check the terms of bundled offers carefully so you understand what is included.
  • If you are interested in the current FunPack offer, review the eligibility and deadline before October 30.

Most importantly, do not buy a package simply because a deadline creates a sense of urgency. Compare the cost with what you expect to use and decide whether it offers value for your trip.

The takeaway: Cruise add-ons are easiest to evaluate when you know your sailing details and your own habits.

Check current offers and package information through Carnival Cruise Line.

💡 Your Downtime Travel Tip: Pause Before You Pay

Whether you are reserving a hotel, booking a cruise, or adding extras to an upcoming vacation, take a moment before completing the purchase.

💙 Downtime Tip:

Confirm the total price, review what is included, check the cancellation terms, and make sure you are using a legitimate website or verified payment method. If something feels rushed or unusual, pause and investigate before proceeding.

A little extra care now can help you spend less time worrying about the details later, leaving more room to enjoy the journey.

💬 A Question for You

When you start planning a vacation, what usually inspires you first?

  • The destination: Somewhere you have always wanted to visit.
  • The trip itself: A particular cruise ship, river cruise, or resort.
  • The experiences: History, nature, local culture, good food, or simply time to relax.

I’d love to know what gets your travel planning started. Your answer might even inspire a future Travel Currents topic!
