🌴 One Day in St. Maarten (From Your Cruise Ship)

Two Countries, One Easy & Unforgettable Port Day

If your cruise stops in St. Maarten, you’re getting something a little extra special.

This island is actually split into two sides - the Dutch side (St. Maarten) and the French side (Saint Martin). And yes, you can experience both in a single day… if you want to.

But here’s the good news: you don’t have to pack your day full to enjoy this stop.

St. Maarten is one of those ports where you can keep things simple, go with the flow, and still have an amazing time.

📱 First Things First (Before You Get Off the Ship)

Before heading out, take a quick minute to:

  • Double-check ship time vs. island time
  • Bring some small cash (taxis, beach chairs, tips)
  • Pack sunscreen and water

A little prep goes a long way here especially since you’ll likely be heading away from the port.

☀️ Morning: Pick Your Perfect Start

You’ve got two really great ways to kick off your day, depending on your vibe.

✈️ Option 1: Maho Beach (That Famous Plane Spot)

Head over to Maho Beach - this is the beach you’ve probably seen all over social media.

Planes fly right overhead as they land, and it’s one of those things that feels a little unreal the first time you see it.

It’s exciting, loud, and definitely memorable.

👉 Best for: first-time visitors or anyone wanting a bucket list moment

🏖️ Option 2: Easy Beach Day in Philipsburg

If you’re more in the mood for a relaxed start:

  • Hop on a water taxi or take a short walk into Philipsburg
  • Set up right on the beach near town

You’ll find:

  • Beach chairs and umbrellas
  • Restaurants and bars
  • Calm water and easy access back to the ship

👉 Best for: low-stress, no-planning-needed kind of day

🍽️ Lunch: Go Casual or Go French

By lunchtime, you’ve got a couple of fun options.

🍹 Stay on the Dutch Side

Grab something right by the beach - fresh seafood, burgers, and a tropical drink always seem like the right choice here.

🥐 Head to the French Side

If you want to switch things up, take a taxi to Marigot.

This side feels a little quieter and more European, with:

  • Sidewalk cafés
  • Bakeries (yes, the pastries are worth it)
  • A slower, more relaxed pace

🌿 Afternoon: Explore or Unwind

This is where you decide how much (or how little) you want to do.

🌍 Option 1: Visit Both Sides

If you didn’t earlier, this is a great time to:

  • Take a quick island tour
  • Cross from Dutch to French side
  • Stop for photos, shopping, or dessert

It’s not every day you get to visit two countries before dinner.

🛍️ Option 2: Shop & Stroll

Back in Philipsburg:

  • Walk along Front Street
  • Browse duty-free shops
  • Pick up a few souvenirs

🏖️ Option 3: Stay Right Where You Are

Honestly, one of the best choices.

Find a beach chair, order another drink, and just enjoy the moment. No schedule, no rushing.

🌅 Heading Back to the Ship

Give yourself more time than you think you need to get back.

Traffic can sneak up on you here, especially if you’ve gone to the other side of the island.

👉 This is one of those ports where it’s better to be early than stressed.

🚢 Quick Tips for a Smooth Day

  • ✔️ Water taxis are an easy way to get into town
  • ✔️ Taxis aren’t usually metered -agree on the price first
  • ✔️ Beaches are the main attraction (you really can’t go wrong)
  • ✔️ Keep a close eye on time if you’re exploring both sides

💙 Why St. Maarten Is Such a Great Cruise Stop

This is one of those ports that works for everyone.

You can:

  • Keep it simple with a beach day
  • Do something unique like plane spotting
  • Or explore two cultures in one stop

And the best part? You can do it all without overplanning or overthinking it.

If St. Maarten is on your itinerary and you’re not sure how to plan your day, I’m always happy to help you put together something that fits your travel style 💙
