If you’ve ever stepped onto a cruise ship and thought,
“Why does everyone suddenly have their own language?”
You’re not wrong 😄
Cruising has its own little vocabulary and once you know it, everything feels a lot less confusing and a lot more fun.
Here are 10 cruise words you’ll hear all the time onboard.
This is just a fancy word for getting on the ship at the start of your cruise.
It’s your check-in day, luggage drop-off, and that exciting moment you finally step onboard.
Your cabin. Your room. Your cruise home base.
Cruise lines call it a stateroom, but it’s where you sleep, relax, and occasionally hide from the buffet crowd 😄
A day when the ship is sailing and you’re not in port.
These are often some of the best days - no excursions, just ship life, naps, and pool time.
A day when the ship is docked and you can explore a destination.
Think: excursions, beach days, shopping, or just wandering around somewhere new.
This is your main sit-down restaurant onboard.
You’ll hear people say “We’re heading to the MDR tonight” like it’s totally normal… because on cruises, it is 😄
A required safety briefing that happens at the start of your cruise.
It’s quick, important, and usually more streamlined now than people expect.
The little tag you attach to your suitcase so it gets delivered to your stateroom.
You’ll hear people talking about printing them, folding them, or “putting them on early.”
The time used onboard the ship - not necessarily the same as local time in port.
This one is very important so you don’t accidentally miss the ship 😅
Your cruise ID, room key, and onboard charge card all in one.
You’ll use it for everything from your cabin door to buying a drink.
The process of leaving the ship at the end of your cruise.
Not nearly as fun as embarkation - but just as important to understand.
You don’t need to memorize cruise vocabulary before you sail… but knowing a few key words definitely makes everything feel smoother.
And honestly?
Half the fun of cruising is slowly realizing you do understand the language after a day or two onboard.
Before you know it, you’ll be saying things like “Let’s head back to the stateroom before muster drill” like a seasoned cruiser 😄
