Cruise Etiquette & Privacy Questions: What You Should Know (Without Overthinking It)

Balcony boundaries, loud neighbors, and the truth about “washey washey”

There’s a moment on a cruise where you realize: 🚢

You’re sharing this experience with a lot of other people.

And while no one hands you a rulebook, there are a few unspoken things that can make your trip feel a whole lot smoother. ✨

Nothing complicated. Just the kind of things people usually figure out halfway through the week.

1. “Are There Rules… or Just Vibes?”

The Question:
"Am I going to accidentally do something wrong?"

The Question:
"Am I going to accidentally do something wrong?" 🧐

The Reality:
Cruises aren’t strict but they do run on a kind of shared understanding.

Most of it comes down to:

  • Being aware of the people around you
  • Respecting shared spaces
  • And remembering you’re essentially in a floating hotel

You don’t need to overthink it.

But a little awareness goes a long way. 🌊

2. Balcony Privacy (Or… Not Quite)

The Question:
"Are balconies private?"

The Reality:
They’re more semi-private.

You’ve got your own space—but: 🌅

  • Sound carries more than you expect
  • Neighbors are closer than they seem
  • Crew may occasionally be visible nearby

So yes, enjoy your balcony coffee in peace ☕

Just maybe don’t assume you’re completely alone out there.

3. The Loud Neighbor Situation 😬

The Question:
"What if the people next to me are loud?"

The Reality:
Sometimes… they are.

It’s a shared space, and not everyone keeps the same schedule. 😴

If it becomes an issue:

  • A quick call to guest services usually helps
  • Earplugs can be a quiet lifesaver
  • Cabin location (mid-ship, away from elevators) can make a difference next time

Most of the time, it’s manageable. Just not always predictable. 🤷

4. “Washey Washey” (Yes, It’s a Thing)

The Question:
"Why is someone reminding me to wash my hands before I eat?"

The Reality:
Cruise lines take hygiene very seriously.

You’ll notice: 🧼

  • Handwashing stations at buffets
  • Hand sanitizer everywhere
  • Friendly crew members gently reminding you as you walk in

And yes… sometimes they’ll literally say “washey washey” 😄

It might feel a little over the top at first but it’s one of the reasons cruises stay as clean and safe as they do.

5. Chair Saving & Pool Etiquette

The Question:
"Can I save a chair by the pool?"

The Reality:
Technically… no.

In practice? People try. 🏖️

Most cruise lines have rules about unattended items being removed after a certain time but it still happens.

The unspoken approach:

  • Use a chair when you’re actually there
  • Don’t expect it to sit empty all day
  • Go early if it really matters to you

It’s less about rules and more about sharing the space. 🤝

6. Elevators, Hallways & The Little Things

The Question:
"Anything else I should know?"

The Reality:
The small habits matter more on a ship than anywhere else.

Things like: 🛗

  • Letting people off the elevator before getting on
  • Keeping voices down in hallways late at night
  • Not stopping suddenly in busy walkways

Nothing complicated. Just… awareness.

Final Thought: You Don’t Have to Get It Perfect

Cruise etiquette isn’t about following a long list of rules. 📋

It’s more like reading the room, just on a much bigger scale.

Pay a little attention. Be considerate.

And you’ll fit right in without even thinking about it.

And if you forget something?

You’ll probably just hear a cheerful voice behind you saying…
“Washey washey!” 😉
