There’s nothing quite like the Caribbean—the turquoise waters, sunny skies, and laid-back island vibes are exactly what vacation dreams are made of. Whether it’s your first cruise or your fifth, packing smart can make all the difference in how relaxed and ready you feel once you're on board.
As a cruise-loving travel advisor who's learned a few things from sailing the Caribbean over the years, I’ve pulled together my top packing tips to help you feel confident, comfortable, and totally cruise-ready!
1. Lightweight, Breathable Clothing 👗👕
The Caribbean is warm and humid year-round, so fabrics like cotton, linen, and moisture-wicking blends will be your best friends. Think sundresses, tank tops, shorts, and light skirts. Evenings on the ship may be a little breezy—so bring a light sweater or wrap, just in case.
2. Swimsuits, Swimsuits, and More Swimsuits 🩱🌺
If your days involve poolside lounging or beach-hopping (which they definitely should!), pack at least 2–3 swimsuits so you always have a dry one ready. Add a couple of cover-ups, too—perfect for walking around the ship or heading to lunch after a dip.
3. Sunscreen & Aloe 🌞
That tropical sun doesn’t play! Choose a reef-safe sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply often, especially after swimming. An aloe gel or after-sun lotion is a great backup in case you catch more rays than expected.
4. Comfortable Shoes 👟👡
Bring sandals for around the ship, flip-flops for the beach, and a pair of sturdy walking shoes or sneakers for excursions. Some ports involve cobblestone streets or longer walks, so you’ll be glad for the support.
5. Waterproof Bag or Backpack 🎒🌧️
A small waterproof bag or dry backpack is ideal for keeping your phone, camera, towel, and other essentials safe from splashes on boat tours or unexpected showers. Plus, it keeps everything in one place on shore days.
6. Adapters & Chargers ⚡🔌
Most cruise ships sailing from the U.S. use standard American outlets, but if you’re coming from abroad, check to see if you need an adapter. And don’t forget your phone charger, camera battery, or even a power strip (non-surge protected) if you need more plugs in your cabin.
7. Formal or Dressy Attire 👔👗
Most Caribbean cruises include one or two formal nights. “Formal” can range from cocktail dresses and dress shirts to full-on evening wear. Check with your cruise line for the dress code, and bring at least one dressy outfit for dinner, shows, or professional photos.
8. Snacks & Refillable Water Bottle 🍫🥤
While there’s plenty to eat onboard, a few granola bars or crackers come in handy during long excursions or travel days. A refillable water bottle is a must—stay hydrated while you explore those beautiful beaches!
9. Travel Documents & Essentials ✈️🛳️
Don’t forget your passport (or other approved ID), cruise tickets, boarding pass, travel insurance info, and any required health documents. Keep these in your carry-on—not your checked luggage—so you can access them easily at check-in.
10. A Good Book & Stylish Sunglasses 🕶️📚
Whether you're lounging by the pool or relaxing on a hammock in port, there's nothing better than diving into a good beach read. Sunglasses (preferably polarized) will protect your eyes and elevate your vacation style.
Bonus Tips:
Cruising the Caribbean is all about soaking up sunshine, indulging in tropical vibes, and leaving your worries at the shore. So pack smart, leave a little room for souvenirs, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure.
