3 Things to Do in Cozumel Beyond the Beach

Because there’s more to this island than just sand between your toes

When most people think of Cozumel, their minds instantly drift to powdery white beaches and turquoise waves — and hey, I get it. The beaches are chef’s kiss. But on a recent cruise, I discovered a whole other side of Cozumel that deserves just as much love.

If you're cruising there soon (or dreaming about it), here are 3 must-try experiences that go way beyond the beach:

1. Sip, Stir, and Savor: Tequila Tasting with a Twist

Yes, there’s tequila. But this isn’t your college spring break kind of experience — it’s educational and delicious. You’ll learn how true Mexican tequila is made (from agave to aging), and the tasting is guided so you can actually taste the differences between blancos, reposados, and añejos.

Pro tip: Buy a small bottle of your favorite to take home. It's the perfect way to relive your vacation vibes long after you’ve unpacked.

2. Sweet, Sticky & Sacred: Discovering Mayan Honey

Bet you didn’t know that Cozumel is home to a unique stingless bee called the Melipona. Their honey has been used in Mayan medicine and rituals for centuries, and it’s still harvested today.

We visited a small bee sanctuary where I got to try this golden goodness straight from the hive. It was floral, smooth, and totally unlike anything I’ve ever had. Plus, it’s the kind of souvenir that comes with a story.

3. Chocolate the Way the Ancients Did It

Forget the candy bar — I’m talking about real chocolate. We toured a small chocolate workshop where they handcraft chocolate using traditional Mayan methods. You’ll learn how cacao beans are roasted and ground, and yes, there are samples (lots of them!).

There’s even a hands-on station where you can make your own chocolate disc with the spices you like. Cinnamon and chili? Yes please!

Final Thoughts

Cozumel will always be a beach lover’s paradise — but if you’re ready to explore a little deeper, you’ll find culture, flavor, and experiences that stay with you long after you leave the island.

Planning a cruise? I can help you find excursions like these that are anything but ordinary.
